The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) provides critical care to newborns who are ill or premature. Many factors may lead to a newborn being admitted to the NICU, including low birth weight or complications during delivery. The NICU staff works closely with parents to develop a treatment plan for their newborn.

At HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest, we are proud to serve the Northwest Houston area with a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) designated by the Texas Department of State Health Services. In our 22-bed unit, specially-trained physicians and nurses offer 24/7 treatment for babies born from 23 weeks to term of gestation.

We are prepared to address your infant's needs, and work to keep them warm and safe via the services of a 24/7 in-house neonatologist, high-tech incubators, monitoring systems and specialized treatments.

NICU services we provide

We have the advanced technology and training to address the special needs of newborns in need of NICU care. Babies requiring this type of specialized care are usually admitted within the first 24 hours after birth, though the length of time they spend in the NICU depends on the severity of their condition. Most babies are admitted if they are premature, have a low birth weight, experienced difficulties during delivery, or show signs of a problem shortly after birth.

Acute services for infants include life support, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), echocardiography and a full range of respiratory support services. Our full range of offerings includes:

Neonatal transport team
Parental support and education
Skin-to-skin care and support

In addition to treating mothers and newborns at the hospital, the department is dedicated to providing neonatal and maternal education to the community. We are also able to facilitate transports through HCA Houston AirLIFE to Level IV NICUs if an even higher level of care is needed.
